Montana
The photographs in this gallery were taken within forty eight hours on the Dana Ranch near Cascade, Montana. I was on an elk hunt with friends from Houston. Late one morning we were driven out of the mountains and back to the ranch headquarters by a heavy snow storm. After lunch I put my hunting gear back on, grabbed my camera and headed back out into the blizzard for some photography. After a couple of hours the snow abated. The following morning the sky was absolutely clear and deep blue, the sun shining on the freshly fallen snow.
Early afternoon, heavy snow.
The dog did not mind the blizzard at all.
The horse did not seem to pay much attention to it, either, in spite of its frosty covering.
Snow coated trees.
The storm has moved on, but still hides the mountains behind this stand of trees.
The corral under a coat of snow.
The snow is heavy and wet.
This thermometer has probably not worked for years, but it’s cold!
A passing school bus gets the horses’ attention.
But not for long. Back to the feed trough.
The hunters’ abode at the Dana Ranch. Sure beats a tent, especially today.
The sky is starting to clear by sundown.
The next morning is beautiful.
A cold, pristine morning.
A quiet, peaceful scene.
